This Christmas should be about the spirit of the season, spending time with family and friends, and having a jolly ol’ time. But in between trimming the tree and getting Christmas dinner on the table, don’t forget about one very important detail: security! Synonymous with the Christmas season is presents. We all love unwrapping our new presents and seeing what new knickknacks and items we get to enjoy. But those expensive and shiny new presents need to be protected from the grubby hands of burglars who may be lurking in your neighborhood.
Reports show that the holidays are busy season for burglars; homeowner insurance companies receive a flash flood of home insurance claims during the holidays regarding stolen goods. Why? Because burglars know that there’s a good chance you won’t be home this Christmas, whether you’re on a two-week vacation, or if you’re just out of the house more often, shopping for presents. Furthermore, having all of those lovely presents under the tree makes it almost too easy for any burglar to just come in and take what they want—especially since they know the under tree is where to look.
That’s why homeowners should take extra security precautions during the holidays, and it wouldn’t hurt to boost the amount of home insurance coverage on their policy, either (the current policy may not cover any of the new presents you have bought, so make sure that they are included in there).
To boost your home security, you can install a quality alarm and security system; invest in motion sensitive lights; buy deadbolt locks; keep Christmas presents in a safe place that is NOT under the tree; and dispose of empty present boxes with discretion.
Don’t forget to be extra cautious this holiday season and beware of greedy home burglars. And just in case, add your presents and other belongings to your home insurance policy, to make sure you are covered.
