Stay on Top of Your Homeowners Insurance Policy

As a homeowner, you are responsible for so many things; it could be easy to get out of date with your insurance coverage. One of the big risks you face is being underinsured or not realizing the gaps in your homeowners insurance policy. It is best to be aware of these problems before they actually become problems and you end up paying out of pocket to get your house repaired. Talk to your insurance agent to make sure these gaps don’t apply to your homeowners insurance quotes.

1. Flood insurance. Most basic homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. Its more common to cover fires or even earthquakes but you will have to buy flood separately.

2. Sewage back-up. Many people think that sewage back up and flood coverage are the same but they cover different things. Sewage can back up in any part of your home causing damage to your personal property along with your home. Its important to make sure you have this coverage and that you are not obligated to pay a lot if damage does occur.

3. Content Coverage. With your home come the things you put in it. Standard homeowners insurance policies will cover your personal belongings but the limit is not usually very much. If you are uncomfortable with the limit your insurance provider sets you can always request more coverage. Its also important to document each item that you want covered from household appliance to personal belongings, it will help you estimate how much coverage to get in your policy.

4. Personal Liability Coverage. Of all the things homeowners are responsible for, guests in your home is a very important one. Personal liability coverage keeps you safe in case anyone becomes harmed in anyway while on your property. This coverage is not included in standard homeowners insurance policies but is considered inexpensive for the amount of coverage you receive.
